NORTON GHOST COMPRESSION RATIO UPDATE

P.S the recent update version in which I am seeing the problem again is 14.7. If you don't want to try this its cool, it would just be another data point.

If indeed you have 14.7 after a fresh install from CD, then try performing a full backup followed by incremental and see if it works. But depending on when the CD you purchased was created you might have the correct version. If the version number shows 14.7 then you have the PRIOR version in which this problem did NOT exist. If you have earlier than that or later than that, then this test won't prove anything. Then before you perform any live update, run Ghost and select "Help:About".

If you uninstall Ghost and reinstall from the CD. If you are game to try something then you might be able to answer the question if you are having the issue for the same reason I am. So the fact that it seems to work for you on the C drive is not surprising to me.Īll I can tell you is that this problem existed prior to about 6 months ago and was then resolved and with the latest update (recent) the problem came back again. Just so you know, I have 3 internal SATA drives and drive C almost always works correctly, it is always Drives D & E which have problems. Obviously I cannot say for sure that you have the same problem but I strongly suspect you do.

NORTON GHOST COMPRESSION RATIO SOFTWARE

I am a software developer and am intimately familiar with how this is supposed to work so I know there is a real issue here. I have done very controlled testing to prove this and I am still waiting for Symantec to respond on this issue. However, I know that this latest Ghost update has reintroduced a REAL problem where Ghost is not reconciling the drive correctly and this results in incremental images almost as large as the Full.

3) improper PC restarts or shutdowns, etc. 2) defragmentation passes where data has been moved to different HD sectors. There are valid reasons why an incremental can be up to the size of the last full backup 1) a lot of data really has changed. I am corresponding with Symantec Development team in a separate email thread and have also CC'd one of the Symantec VP's on this issue. Now with this new update, ths problem is BACK AGAIN. Prior to that I had done at least 3 dozen incremental backups during that 6 month period (I have 3 internal HD's) and not once did this happen again after Symantec put out that fix. This issue was resolved ~6 months ago and I did NOT see that problem come back again until last week when I downloaded the newest Ghost update. Back about 6 months ago there was a major problem with Ghost where not only would unnecessary reconciliation take place, but it would ALSO create incrementals almost as large as the base even when the two were done only MINUTES apart with nothing but a graceful computer restart in between. The tech person I chatted with seemed to feel it was not a bug. If you or anyone else can figure out how I can get Norton Ghost 14 to do this correctly, I would appreciate letting me know. I guess I'll have to resort to this method for my external usb drives and simply use Norton Ghost 14 for my internal system (c:) drive. I can create normal backups of external drive partitions using Windows XP backup and then subsequently do incremental or differential backups with no problems.

It always seems to take several minutes just comparing the usb drive to the last backup and then proceeds to do a full backup with an iv2i extension. So I guess the bottom line is that Norton Ghost 14 cannot handle backups of external usb drives incrementally. Once a full backup has been made, a daily automatic synchronization takes a minute or two.

I like data backup apps that copy in native format and keep the source and backup synchronized.
